Still, there are some major decisions coming down the pike regarding roster spots and position battles.On The Kist & Solak Show #94, we take an early look at how we think the roster will shape out. One position of major interest is how the guard situation will look like in the beginning of the season. Football Outsiders highlighted it as the Eagles’ sore spot, and they’re not wrong. The good news is Brandon Brooks recently tweeted out some encouraging signs about his recovery.If he’s not ready, is the short-term answer Matt Pryor? The 2018 sixth-round selection checks in at a massive 6’7”, 332 pounds but has yet to play a single snap as a professional. Could Ryan Bates take advantage of this opportunity to find his way onto the roster and earn meaningful snaps? Of all the undrafted free agents, his path to the roster seems the cleanest.Looking at the linebacker position, the addition of veteran Zach Brown muddies the picture for the bottom of the depth chart. While LJ Fort and his $1.9M of guaranteed money seems secure, what about Kamu Grugier-Hill, Paul Worrilow, Nate Gerry and a host of other new additions? From the preseason to the end of the season, Grugier-Hill showed the most promise among the remaining depth pieces.If I had to pick one in serious risk of being on the bubble, it would be Gerry. Out of the linebackers that took over 100 snaps last year, he struggled the most. It will be an important camp for him and his future with the Eagles.One massive question surrounds the future of Jordan Mailata. If the Eagles don’t trade Halapoulivaati Vaitai, will they have room on the roster to protect him? Did the Andre Dillard selection cloud his future with the team? The Eagles once cut ties with Alejandro Villanueva, who later became a solid starting offensive tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...FMIA Week 6: Chiefs-Patriots Leaves Expectations in the Rearview - FMIAI think I’ve got the offensive slump/revival of the Eagles figured out. It’s the Alshon Jeffery factor. The reasons: Jeffery’s the favorite wideout of Carson Wentz. They went nine months and two weeks without playing in the same game. Wentz needs a big and reliable target downfield, because he’s always going to take chances downfield, and his coach is going to call plays for the big and reliable wideout. They didn’t practice full-speed much at all in the offseason because of injuries and rehabs of each. Wentz returned in Week 3 and struggled against Indianapolis. Jeffery played his first game of the year in Week 4 at Tennessee, and Wentz hit him downfield in the middle of two cover men for a touchdown. Chemistry began to happen in that game and then in practice. In the fourth game back for Wentz and third back for Jeffery, against the Giants the other night, Wentz rolled right on a scramble play two minutes into the game, seemed to motion for Jeffery to follow him, stared a hole through Jeffery, and threw across his body on the run to Jeffery for a perfect back-of-the-end-zone touchdown. Eagles scored 34. I believe Wentz now has his two aces in the hole, Zach Ertz and Jeffery, to always rely. Or they could bump Jalen Mills inside in sub packages, play Douglas outside and keep Maddox at safety. The third option would be to move Maddox to nickel full-time and have someone else entirely play safety. That might be someone they trade for or Tre Sullivan (unlikely). I thought that Maddox looked pretty good at safety last week. If I were the Eagles, I’d have Douglas play outside in sub packages, bump Mills inside and keep Maddox at safety.
