It’s time for us to look at each opponent and provide a reason for and against the 49ers beating them. We’ve included a poll for the community to vote on whether they expect a win or a loss and will see what kind of prediction this provides at the end.Week 1 @ Tampa Bay BuccaneersWeek 2 @ Cincinnati BengalsThe 49ers have their first home game in Week 3 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. You can read our opponent preview to see what the Steelers have been up to. It’s hard to find a weakness or reason for the 49ers to win this game. They will need to play smart, mistake-free football to win this one. The Steelers have a solid roster and have proven to be great on both offense and defense. That said, the loss of a few playmakers may hurt them a bit this year. Reason for: The Steelers inconsistent offenseThe Steelers offense is in no way bad, but it is inconsistent. I think Andy Benoit put it best, saying it relies less on rhythm and more on an individual play to get anywhere. Just watch them last year to see what I mean. There’s never much in the way of skilled drives as it is some play that goes for fifty yards to set up a score. This would burn the Steelers late in games when they needed to depend on rhythm and chain several smaller plays together to get anywhere. Maybe the 49ers capitalize on this. Maybe they can stop the big plays from happening and force the Steelers to go out of their comfort zone. They don’t have Antonio Brown Mr. Big Chest and Le’Veon Bell anymore to get away with this and might not be able to get out of trouble like they have in the past. If the 49ers can get some points early and keep the Steelers from doing their one-play wonders, they might be able to walk out of their home opener with a ‘W.’ Reason against: The Steelers don’t want to go 0-3 or 1-2Not that any team in the NFL does, but kick that urgency factor up a notch for the Steelers. Their first two games are against the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks. It’s not crazy to think they come into this at 0-2 and no team wants to be 0-3. For that reason, the Steelers could have a huge sense of urgency to not fall further into the hole Joe Staley Jersey White , and that urgency could make the 49ers take a loss. The 49ers haven’t been to the playoffs in a few years, and they haven’t been placed in a situation where they need to win or lose out on the postseason (at least where it’s not a lost cause). The 49ers very well could come into this at 2-0 given they have the Buccaneers and the Bengals to deal with the first two weeks. Regardless of urgency, the Steelers are a solid team on both sides of the ball. It’s not just the situation, but the talent they are up against. Combine the above situation and the fact that they are a solid unit means the 49ers might be losing in the final minutes. The 49ers went through a period of mediocrity and Smith was one of the few pieces that tried to hold things together. His professionalism is unparalleled and to this day his career is underrated for the things he had to deal with. Which is why it was so gut-wrenching to see the guy fracture his leg the way he did back in 2018. Not just the fracture, but the complications after with it getting infected. The break was gruesome enough (I’m warning you, you don’t want to watch it) Deion Sanders Jersey , but to see him battling post-op issues when you think of everything he had to deal with in his career, it’s just something you don’t wish on people. Well, the good news is, he’s progressing. Smith has been seen out and about with this huge robotic leg-brace thing on his leg and finally, finally some good news: This does not mean Smith is going to be playing football this year (or ever again for that matter). This does mean that recovery is going in the right direction and Smith at least will be able to rehab the injury. I don’t know the ramifications of Smith’s initial infections, but they were not good. Knowing that the brace is coming off is at least a sign that things are going according to plan. Here’s hoping we see Smith on the field again.
