Case Keenum is joining his fifth team in five years and the Denver Broncos are turning to their fifth quarterback since Peyton Manning retired 24 months ago.
General manager John Elway called Keenum ”a great fit for us” after the sixth-year pro parlayed a breakout year in Minnesota into a two-year Cheap DJ Chark Jersey , $36 million deal with Denver.
”Along with that experience,” Elway said, ”his leadership and competitiveness are what you look for in a quarterback.”
Elway, by the way, isn’t done looking at quarterbacks.
Elway and coach Vance Joseph were in Norman, Oklahoma, checking out Baker Mayfield’s pro day when free agency opened Wednesday. Then they were headed for Los Angeles to watch Josh Rosen’s pro day at UCLA on Thursday.
Also, a person with knowledge of the talks told The Associated Press the Broncos were in negotiations Wednesday to trade QB Trevor Siemian to Minnesota, where the Vikings are pursuing free agent Kirk Cousins to be their starter.
The Broncos were busy when free agency opened, keeping linebacker Todd Davis (three years, $15 million); adding cornerback Tramaine Brock (one year, $4 million); finalizing Aqib Talib’s trade to the Los Angeles Rams; and trying to move Siemian, who won the starting QB job in Denver each of the last two years.
Keenum is expected to sign his deal Thursday, giving the 30-year-old journeyman the big payday that’s long eluded him and taking the pressure off Elway to use the fifth overall pick in the draft next month on a quarterback.
Besides Mayfield and Rosen, other high-profile fixes for franchises with quarterback quandaries such as Denver’s include Wyoming’s Josh Allen, USC’s Sam Darnold, Louisville’s Lamar Jackson and Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph.
Coming off a career-changing season, Keenum was widely considered the second-most attractive veteran QB on the market behind Cousins. And he is a player the Broncos know well because Gary Kubiak, now the Broncos’ senior personnel adviser, had him for two seasons while Kubiak was head coach of the Houston Texans.
”Case is perfect for our team, both as a player and as a person,” said Joseph, who also worked for the Texans. ”He’s playing the best football of his career right now and has gotten better with every opportunity he’s had. Being around him in Houston, Case is a tremendous person and teammate with strong leadership skills and a terrific work ethic. He’ll be great in our locker room.”
Keenum, who made $2 million last year, went 11-3 in place of an injured Sam Bradford, leading the Vikings to the NFC championship game.
He threw for more than 3,500 yards with 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His signature moment was that last-second 61-yard touchdown toss to Stefon Diggs that stunned the Saints 29-24 in the playoffs.
The Broncos haven’t been back to the playoffs since Manning retired following Denver’s 24-10 triumph over the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 two years ago.
The Broncos, coming off a 5-11 season, were considered an early front-runner to land Cousins. Minnesota, however, had a sparkling stadium, new state-of-the-art training facility, stacked roster and coaching stability to offer him, while the Broncos’ main magnet was Von Miller.
Even though he issued a public plea for Cousins to join him in Denver, Miller is welcoming Keenum to town .
”Looks/Feels right to me!” Miller said in an Instagram post on Tuesday. ”We got what we were looking for! Franchise QB that’s the perfect fit for DENVER! (at)johnelway with the deep 3 pointer! Like always! Leeettttss Goooo!!! (at)casekeenum7 (at)casekeenum7 Time for me to hold up my end of the deal now!”
Notes: The Broncos placed second-round tenders on two restricted free agents: C Matt Paradis and OLB Shaq Barrett. They declined to offer a tender to WR Bennie Fowler III.

>WASHINGTON 鈥?Amid another lost season and the other off-the-field drama surrounding the Burgundy and Gold this week, you may have missed the rather major legal proceeding taking place. It has flown somewhat under the radar and details have been surprisingly scant and hard to come by.After former general manager Scot McCloughan was fired this March, he filed a grievance against the team for the $2.8 million left on his contract that ownership refused to pay him. The team would have to show just cause in firing him to withhold that money. The hearing for the grievance began Monday in D.C. and while a ruling isn鈥檛 expected for months, the proceeding is expected to wrap up Wednesday.According to USA Today, the team鈥檚 evidence centers around McCloughan鈥檚 well-documented struggles with alcohol Raiders Brandon Parker Jersey , an issue the entire league knew full well about when Washington hired him. It was publicly reported as the reason after he was let go from both the 49ers and Seahawks, despite his professional success at each spot. He also spent time in rehab before coming to Washington. As CBS Sports鈥?Jason LaCanfora pointed out earlier this month, evidence regarding the availability and consumption of alcohol on team property seem likely to be presented in McCloughan鈥檚 defense. That evidence isn鈥檛 hard to come by, even on social media. As a reader reminded me, Chris Cooley said Bruce Allen tossed him a beer after telling him he was cut. pic./0aUSSCAmaY— Dan Steinberg (dcsportsbog) December 11, 2017IF Scot firing ends up in legal battle, it wouldn't take much to demonstrate 'culture of drinking in office' tolerated in DC(Top left) pic./TFYKMCeYSP— Chad Ryan (ChadwikoRCC) March 10, 2017Pro Football Talk posted the NFL鈥檚 Alcohol and Tobacco Policy in their own piece earlier this week, language that seems to speak pretty directly to the anecdote and image above (emphasis ours):鈥淣FL policy prohibits the use or presence of alcohol beverages, including beer, in any club setting, including in locker rooms, practice or other facilities, or while traveling, including on team buses or flights at any time during the preseason Adidas James Neal Jersey , regular season or postseason, including during the practice week and on game day,鈥?the policy states. 鈥淭his prohibition extends not only to players, but to all team personnel, as well as to other guests traveling with the team or who have access to club facilities.鈥滻n the grand scheme of an NFL budget, $2.8 million is hardly a seismic amount of money. Refusing to pay would seem to be more about pride and keeping up appearances for why McCloughan was let go. As Mike Jones 鈥?the reporter for that USA Today piece and the former team beat reporter for The Washington Post 鈥?told The Sports Junkies last winter, a number of people claimed Allen was jealous of the credit McCloughan had gotten for the team鈥檚 turnaround.Washington went 17-14-1 under McCloughan鈥檚 tenure, making the playoffs two years ago before just missing them last year, despite a second straight winning season. The team is a combined 34-60 under Allen, finishing with a winning record just once 鈥?RG3鈥檚 rookie year. The team has been quiet about the issue all week, but unless the two sides come to a settlement, the result will surface publicly eventually. If the arbitrator Peter Harvey sides with McCloughan, Washington will be out $2.8 million and any credible excuse for letting their best talent evaluator in years walk out the door.
