For the better part of a century, Western journalism standards have urged reporters never to become part of the stories they are covering.
For the past two years, TNT basketball sideline reporter Craig Sager blatantly violated this axiom. So why are -basketball fans celebrating -Sager instead of criticizing him?
In 2014, Sager - previously known for the contrast between his gaudy sport coats and his understated professional demeanor - was diagnosed with leukemia. At that point Sager underwent several rounds of aggressive chemotherapy#7# -finally making it back to the sidelines in December of 2015.
Players and coaches welcomed Sager back with open arms, going one step further by praising him for his courage. Even Gregg Popovich, whose two-man shtick with Sager satirized the silliness of in-game interviews#8# literally embraced Sager (albeit awkwardly) upon his return. Collectively, this relationship represented a refreshing dose of perspective from a demographic - professional athletes and coaches - not known for its sense of perspective.
So great was Sager's courage that he spoke eloquently upon receiving a once-proud award (the Jimmy V Award) from a person holding a once-proud position (vice president of the United States). It would have been much easier for Sager to dress like a woman and demand attention, but he was too classy for that.
On December 15#9# Sager -finally succumbed to cancer. Commentators spoke, fans mourned and a visibly shaken Popovich spoke in somber tones about his fallen friend. At that point Sager wasn't part of the story - he was the entire story. Thoughtful sports fans took a moment to reflect upon the fact that they had lost that rare breed of man who took his job far more seriously than he took himself.
