But as Delle Donne pointed out， the WNBA‘s 3-point line is more than a foot closer to the basket than the NBA’s， and similar logistical discrepancies exist in sports like volleyball （lower nets） and golf （closer tee boxes）。 Tennis provides perhaps the most intriguing example of gender inequality： Serena Williams earned $3 million for winning the 2014 US Open， the same amount as men‘s champion Marin Cilic。


The catch？ Williams won the tournament playing best-of-three-sets matches， as opposed to Cilic‘s best-of-five - each type being standard for women and men during Grand Slam tournaments。 So Williams was paid about $215，000 for every set she won， while Cilic earned about $143，000。


Should Cilic file a wage discrimination lawsuit， demanding equal pay for equal work？ Probably not。 Because “different” isn‘t always synonymous with “sexist。” Often， it simply means “different。” And while lowering the WNBA rims probably wouldn’t significantly alter the league‘s fan base， neither would it relegate its athletes to June Cleaver status， as Taurasi erroneously implied。
